CAPE FEAR WINDSURF SCHOOL
The only place for windsurf lessons on the southern coast of North Carolina.

Here's your chance to master one of the most exciting and empowering water sports since the invention of the boat! No more wondering how or where to learn: it's right here on the sunny Cape Fear coast. Just a few miles south of Carolina Beach & Kure Beach and twenty miles south of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach in beautiful North Carolina, at a place called The Basin.
This is what 'Insiders' Guide North Carolina's Southern Coast and Wilmington 11th Edition' has to say about the windsurf location:
"One of the best and most popular windsurfing areas is The Basin, the partially protected body of water off Federal Point at the southern end of Pleasure Island. Accessible from a public boat ramp [and a little beach] down the road from the ferry terminal, the Basin is enclosed by the Rocks, a 3.3-mile breakwater that extends to Zeke's Island and beyond."
Lessons for beginners start towards the end of May 2012 and will continue into the fall. Lessons for more advanced windsurfers can be scheduled all year round.
The classes are either for one or for two people at a time.

I am a certified Dutch windsurf instructor and I have been teaching beginners and intermediates in The Netherlands from all ages and skill levels since 2000. My own windsurfing experience dates back to 1986. Over the years I've windsurfed in The Netherlands, France, Italy, South Africa and the USA.
How Much?
Private lessons are $50 an hour with a minimum of two hours.
Lessons for two are $35 per person an hour with a minimum of two hours.
Lower rates apply after the first two hours, or for multiple lessons. Call, text or email for more information.
By the end of the two hours you will know how to stand on the board, hold on to the sail, sail away, change direction, and - get back to where you started from! You may not get all of the above, but it will surely be a fun two hours!
All necessary equipment (boards and rigged sails) is provided and ready to go when you arrive - all you need to bring is water footwear, your swim wear and sun screen. Forget about wet suits because the water in the shallow Basin is warm.

Who?
Windsurfing can be enjoyed by nearly anyone. Skill is not important. You do however need some strength so I can't guarantee any results for those under 12. Other than that - anyone who enjoys water, sun and wind is a potential windsurfer!
When?
Anytime between 10 am and 6 pm, 7 days a week. Depending on the weather. The wind needs to be onshore (coming from the south, check here) for a beginner class.
Where?
The Basin is located at the very end of U.S. Route 421 (S. Fort Fisher Blvd), past Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, on the southern tip of Pleasure Island. Follow the signs for the ferry to South Port. The parking lot for The Basin is just past the exit to the ferry.
